The Reel Mower Story

Fairway Lawns ATX started with an unreasonable amount of attention paid to a golf broadcast. Every April, the same thing happened: the Masters would air, the cameras would pan across Augusta, and someone in the room would say, “Why doesn’t my lawn look like that?”

The honest answer, it turns out, has almost nothing to do with money, weather, or Georgia soil. It has to do with the mower.

Reel vs. Rotary: The Actual Difference

Most residential mowers — the kind you push or ride around the yard — are rotary mowers. A single blade spins horizontally at high speed and rips through grass with blunt force. It works, but it tears the tip of every blade it touches, leaving a ragged, whitish edge that browns within a day or two.

Reel mowers — the kind used on golf fairways, greens, and yes, Augusta — use a rotating cylinder of blades that shears grass against a fixed bedknife, like a pair of scissors closing. The cut is clean. The blade heals fast. The grass grows in denser because it isn’t spending energy repairing torn tissue. And because reel mowers can cut lower and more evenly than rotary decks, you get that tight, uniform finish — and yes, the stripes.
